HOLDING PENS: BETWEEN HEAVEN AND HELL

Despite millions of acres of “free” public lands available for use by the Department of the Interior, temporary and short-term holding pens are usually located on rented private land. Members of the press and the public are not allowed onto the premises without permission and an escort.

Here, the mares and foals are supposed to “mother up” or find each other, but their reunions are far from joyful. Mares and foals are traumatized. Many are injured. When corrals are crowded, there’s fighting among the mares. Most are strangers to one another, and they become suddenly territorial because all they have to guard is a patch of sand and their baby.

There are more stallion battles when the males are crowded together and able to scent their families. If the stallions fall or collapse to their knees, there’s no place for them to go, and they are often kicked and trampled.

Temporary holding is where injured horses and those with “preexisting conditions” are weeded out. Because the press and public are rarely allowed on the property, it’s hard to know for sure how many horses are destroyed.
